Here's the latest:...

New Fillmore poster for The Kooks. They're a band from Brighton, England
and while I was researching the band, came across a pretty cool festival
Brighton has every year. It's Burn The Clocks, and it signifies the end of the year
and the start of something new. I thought, since it's a December concert
and the band hails from there, it would make an arresting image.
I added the skylines to San Francisco and Brighton in the background

The Kooks, poster, Fillmore, San Francisco

.......

I've also started working with the fantastic people over at MoonAlice to create posters
for their shows. Here are my first two offerings... The newest one is for the
awesome Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
Signed posters are for sale... just email me.

I've just finished a tour poster for Eels.
The "Tremendous Dynamite Tour" 2011.
Silk-screened. Three color. 11" x 17"

Poster for Keren Ann's show at Yoshi's in San Francisco.
Limited-Edition of 150. Signed and numbered.
This is printed on metallic Juniper paper and contains
the images used for the countdown towards her "101" album.
Great show... and Keren Ann was wonderful, as always, staying around
to sign posters. I've got some more of these left, $60 (plus shipping).

Poster for the
Death Cab for Cutie show at The Fillmore.
Idea based on frontman Ben Gibbard's lyrical journey
from difficult times to happiness
(reflected by the raft finally coming home)
Some Seattle references throughout and
Death Cab's albums along with a Kerouac novel.
It's 13" x 19" on card stock. Email me if you're interested.
I've signed the posters.

Poster for the new Grandaddy / Earlimart superband,
Admiral Radley... They headlined a Noise Pop Fest show at
San Francisco's Bottom of the Hill with Typhoon, Social Studies
and Fake Your Own Death... Limited-Edition of 100... signed and numbered...
Printed on Aspire Autumn Hay metallic paper by Monolith Press...

This poster for the excellent band, Beach House,
who, along with San Francisco's own talented Papercuts, played the Fillmore...
I went through about 10 comps before this one was approved... whew!

=====================================

I am now working on a huge project for the amazing Keren Ann.
I am doing 101 drawings in 101 days as an expression of her lyrics
to the title song and as a countdown to her forthcoming album
called, you guessed it, "101."

Her first single "My Name is Trouble" is out now and it's breathtaking.
You can check out the artwork as it rolls out here.
And here's a peek at a few (of many!) illustrations:

=====================================

Guided By Voices reunion show at The Warfield.
Limited-edition of 100.

Printed on Gold Aspire Petallics Metallic paper.
Three inks (black, white and red). $60.

Vampire Weekend at The Fillmore in Miami Beach...
Limited-edition of 100. 50 were sent to the band / management...
I've got the rest for sale... 18x24... Signed and numbered.
two inks (black and white) on Vellum Cyan 80# stock. $60.

I'm particularly proud to do a poster that features my Greek Heritage!

=====================================

The Hold Steady
(with The Donkeys and A Decent Animal)
at The Fillmore in San Francisco...
...this one deals with a NYC Subway redesign...
Type is old school subway font...
from the Brooklyn area...where The Hold Steady are based.

Yo La Tengo

at The Fillmore in San Francisco.

TEGAN & SARA at The Fox Theater
in Oakland... Holly Miranda and Steel Train opened...
This is a limited-edition of 100 (signed and numbered)... 18x24" silk screen.
Two-color (black and white) on copper metallic paper..
This did very well at the show (everyone seemed to love it... T&S had some wonderful compliments!)
... but I've still got a few left...
They're $75... email me if you're interested...
By the way... the Fox Theater is AMAZING! Check out a show there if you can... beautiful place.

=====================================

They Might Be Giants... based on the famous
Saul Steinberg New Yorker cover.
13" x 19"

=====================================

Here's the poster I did for Grizzly Bear at The Fillmore.
Fantastic show!... (the charms around the girl's neck
reflect each of the band's first three albums).

=====================================

I did an illustration for the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center
(sometimes known as The Rafael) in San Rafael... Being used for ads, as well as a poster...

=====================================

Limited-edition (of 50) prints for the amazing band Cloud Cult.
(still have a few left) Say Hi opened and was very impressive.

=====================================

I got the cover for The Nation magazine!
Based on an idea I've been playing with for over six months.
It took me about 3 months to finish this.
The response has been simply phenomenal.
I've been reading The Nation for years and even booked my first-ever trip
to New York to coincide with their 125th Anniversary party a while ago.

I'll be offering a limited-edition large print (most likely quantity: 250)
soon... as well as more affordable posters. I plan on updating the image to
include additional Civil Rights figures that couldn't make the cut for space reasons
These will probably be available in mid-March.

Check back here for details or drop an e-mail my way if you're interested.

=====================================

Here's a couple of posters that I've recently finished...
One for Andrew Bird at The Fillmore (Loney Dear opened
and both bands were quality). Bird was everything I've heard about
plus a lot more. Amazing violin work, not to mention his superb whistling skills
...

...the other Martha Wainwright for her Noise Pop show
at Slim's. Both shows were excellent.

I have posters from both shows available. Drop me a line if you're interested.
I'm also currently working on a poster for Asobi Seksu.
They're playing later this month at The Independent in San Francisco.
(Give 'em a listen. Definitely worth your time...)

=====================================

Fountains of Wayne played two nights at Cafe Du Nord and I created this poster
(silk-screen, edition of 100) for the occasion. Two-color, 18 x 24, using
(as with the Earlimart poster below)
the graphics from a 100 year-old San Francisco newspaper.
It printed wonderfully, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to sell this print at the show.
The good news: I do have some available for purchase.
Just send me an e-mail.

=====================================

Here's the Widespread Panic poster I did for a sold-out, special benefit show
at New York's historic Fillmore at Irving Plaza.

=====================================

Limited-edition (of 50) poster for the mind-blowing Portland band
Menomena. Some left... E-mail me if you're interested.

=====================================

I'm extremely proud to announce the new cd EP
from Built For The Sea is now out.
I did the artwork (cover, back, etc.) and I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity.
Built For The Sea is a San Francisco band that is going places.
Check out their music here.
A lot of comparisons exist (Radiohead, Mazzy Star, early 10,000 Maniacs...)
but just do yourself a favor and give 'em a listen. They're excellent.

Here's the cover...

and here's the back...

=====================================

Limited-edition (of 100) silk-screen (three colors)
printed, wonderfully, by Monolith Printers in Emeryville.

They're signed and numbered.

It's for the Janet Jackson show in Sunrise, Florida in October.

I've got about 40 left. Drop me a line, if you're interested.

=====================================

I did this poster for one of my musical idols, Paul Weller (of the legendary
British mod band, The Jam). This was for his show at The Fillmore.
It was an amazing set. Filled with songs from his past and present.
("Eton Rifles!" and "Butterfly Collector!")
The crowd, which usually splits early, hung
around for the final note. This poster was based on the title of his latest
album, "22 Dreams" and a scene from a Fellini movie.
E-mail me if you're interested.

=====================================

This poster was done for the Earlimart show at
Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco.
Tough to see, but the paper is from 99 years ago
to the day of the concert date. It's the now defunct San Francisco Call,
which I tweaked the hell out of.
Limited-edition of 50.
I've still got a few left if you're interested.
(Earlimart's new album "Hymn And Her" is excellent!)

=====================================

Limited-edition (of 60) posters for the Tegan & Sara show in Berkeley...

I was also told to bring some artwork with me to the gig, so Sara could take a look through it...

I met Sara before the show and we chatted for about 15 minutes or so,
as she looked through some of my art prints... She ended up buying two pieces...
Tegan also bought two pieces... they were gracious and charming, so their stage persona
is just an extension of their actual personalities... (ie. just great) ...

Here's the poster...

BREAKING NEWS

The New Yorker cover for the Sept. 11th Anniversary issue,
has won the ASME
(American Society of Magazine Editors)

2007 COVER OF THE YEAR
This cover was created by Owen Smith and myself.

You can see the info here

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

HERE'S THE STORY OF MY COVER IDEA FOR
THE NEW YORKER's SEPTEMBER 11th ANNIVERSARY ISSUE:

Here it is: (rendered beautifully by Owen Smith)

Copyright © CondéNet 2006

THE STORY: A while back, I sent a few ideas to The New Yorker,
(they've used some in the past)
and among them was this September 11th anniversary idea:

...that one didn't fly (although I still like it) so I worked on a few different angles...
I had recently read about Philippe Petit, the man who walked between the WTC towers
on a tightrope in August of 1974. I thought about how it would never be possible to duplicate
that feat. But thinking about the strength and determination of New Yorkers
on September 11th (and beyond) I thought,
"they could still do it.... and they wouldn't need a tightrope".
That lead me to this sketch:

The Art Director of The New Yorker, Françoise Mouly, called back
and said they liked the idea. They wanted to see what I could come up with...
I tried a few more ideas around the theme...

cleaned-up version of the above idea (without a body to reflect "everyone"
...Magritte influence, as well)... nope.

...
combined original idea with above idea... nope and nope...

...
thought about using the legs as the towers... or the city as the tightrope... nah.

Finally, I went with the looking down version... over the WTC site.

although I love this image, The New Yorker still thought it wasn't quite right
and it was passed over to the excellent Mr.Smith. And, knowing Owen (which I don't)
he promptly knocked it out of the park on his first try.

(I've since met him... he's a great guy...)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

From the ASME website:

From The New Yorker: For the five-year 9/11 anniversary cover,
John Mavroudis’ concept was to stay away from the surfeit of images that recall the horror
and remember the wonder of Philippe Petit’s 1974 tight-rope walk between the towers.
The result in Owen Smith’s painting is magical: the walker, in the absence of towers and rope,
remains suspended in the white space of a blank page.
The two-part cover (a first for The New Yorker) is a memorial to the spirit
of humanity and those who died there, and especially to the man who did
a perfect dive as he plunged to his death.

Advertising Age magazine also named it one of
the 10 Best Magazine Covers of the Year.

Here's what Advertising Age said:

"Even those who don't remember Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk
between the towers of the World Trade Center feel this void. A second
cover, behind the first, filled in the white space with the
footprints of the towers. "Soaring Spirit," by John Mavroudis and
Owen Smith, tugged us upward without forgetting the fall."

Some more news and happenings....

My Eels Fillmore poster was chosen
to be represented in 3x3 magazine's
Illustration Annual No. 4 coming out in early 2008.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Here's a gig poster for
the Warfield show (San Francisco)
featuring a very cool band from
the Great White North...
The New Pornographers
(The band's manager let me do the poster,
but didn't allow me to sell it at the show...)
The New Yorker's Eustace Tilley
gets a sleazy makeover...
It's a limited-edition of 50...

Here's the poster for the Feist shows
at The Fillmore...

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Silk-screen poster for the amazing
Keren Ann... She played the Great American Music Hall in
San Francisco and put on a flat-out brilliant show...
Check her out if you can...
Here's the poster, which sold rather well...

This poster is in a limited-edition of 100.
I still have some remaining... e-mail me if you're interested.
And a special thank you to Keren Ann, who had some very kind
words about the poster and even stopped by after the show
long enough to sign cds and the prints that people purchased...
